Phobias are unreasonable fears that are a lot more extreme than a general feeling of anxiety. An individual with a phobia typically has an irrational fear concerning an animal, situation or environment and when confronted with them, high levels of fear can be generated.
In their minds individuals with a phobia will probably perceive the object of their phobia as posing inappropriate degrees of danger and respond accordingly. Because other people don’t attach the same degrees of danger to the same object the fear can seem silly.
For the most extreme cases, even thinking about the source of their phobia will make the person actually feel panicky.
When someone creates avoidance in daily life specifically to dodge the thing they’re fearful of they would be classed as phobic. However, for some people when the source of the phobia isn’t something a client comes into contact with regularly, like spiders; it won’t affect the way they live their lives too much.
Phobias come in two main types. Complex and Simple Phobias. Simple phobias are by and large isolated to one specific trigger, for example birds, cats, balloons or travelling. Complex phobias have an array of facets to them like agoraphobia, white coat phobia and social phobia these can often be caused by deep rooted beliefs about themselves and the world around them being more dangerous than it truly is.
Almost all phobias are fairly straight forward to get rid of. That’s mainly because they on the whole involve an initial traumatic encounter followed up by one or more re-enforcing incidents.
Phobias take their root in the subconscious mind, which is why hypnotherapy is such a worthwhile treatment. Hypnotherapy allows the phobia sufferer to make changes at a subconscious level that permit them to get rid of or forget about the phobic trigger. Hypnotherapy approaches are a long term solution and a good number of those people who have hypnotherapy to cure a phobia will find they are totally free of their fear in the first few sessions.
So if you’ve been missing out on life due to a phobia, perhaps now is the ideal time to get it sorted permanently.
Andy Cox from Assured Effects Hypnotherapy based in Dorset explained why in their view hypnosis is extremely effective in dealing with phobias. “Phobic people rarely look to hypnotherapy unless there is a more pressing reason for removing the phobia- because it is hard to see life without the phobia and the fear of what the phobia represents. Most phobias are overcome in just 2 or 3 one hour hypnotherapy sessions”.
