Paediatric Hypnotherapy

It’s not just adults that face problems, life can be tricky for children and adolescents too.

Life for a child is filled with new adventures, discoveries and experiences, although that entails a few surprises and unexpected situations which might be challenging, stressful or traumatic along the way.

However, as adults, we often overlook this as we are busy caring for the family, making certain we provide for everyone and make sure the entire family is safe and secure.  Any anxiety that a child is struggling with might go unnoticed until, not surprisingly, the child develops a behaviour that is at odds with our idea of how things should be.  This is when we tend to realize that there is a problem.

Hypnotherapy can help children with many issues

Interacting with young people is amongst the most fulfilling areas of my work. Some examples of areas in which I have worked include:

  • Habits including thumb-sucking
  • Trichotillomania (hair-pulling)
  • Nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) and Encopresis (soiling)
  • Sleep terrors
  • Nightmares, and other sleep disturbances
  • Swallowing problems
  • Eating issues, food aversions, and choking
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Confidence building
  • Dyslexia related issues
  • Illness
  • Self harm
  • Compliance with medication
  • Stuttering/stammering
  • Weight issues
  • Exam nerves
  • Nail biting
  • Bullying
  • Anger
  • Eczema
  • Fears and phobias
  • Problems associated with learning difficulties

Working with Children

It is not necessary to describe how paediatric hypnotherapy works together with children because, in contrast to adults, they don’t place emphasis on the process, only the change!  As a result, the change occurs much faster as they are not analysing what happens to them.

Whenever the child asks “What’s going to happen?” I simply state that they are going to just relax and be calm and that I am going to help them to use the power of their own imagination to discover ways to react differently to the issue that they have.

Whilst tackling a specific childhood problem, I will introduce positive affirmations to the child, that is that they will become more relaxed, have a lot more energy, look and feel more confident, happier, like themselves more, and so on.

Children are incredibly suggestible and respond well to hypnotherapy.  They make great use of their imaginations and so I make the most of that, too.  Whilst they are in hypnosis I will use stories, past adventures, use a hero or perhaps a character from a favoured TV programme who advises you what to do.  These ideas are enthusiastically accepted by young children.

Amazingly, even older children tend to be open to working with their imagination, however, because their thinking is much more developed then that process needs to be modified but, in any case, the principle is still the same.

Our sessions are very informal and relaxed as they are intended to help your child relax while their concerns are being addressed.  Often when we work together I may record a relaxation session which you are able to then take away on CD or MP3 to help enhance the work we have done. In fact, quite a few parents claim that when they listen to this with their child they find themselves feeling very relaxed too!

In order to achieve the best possible outcome, it is essential that your child would like to change their problem behaviour or issue from the outset.  Also, throughout the process, the attendance and involvement of the parent or carer is essential as a parent’s apprehension about their child’s behaviour can often bring further anxiety to the situation.

Our clinic is the only the hypnotherapy clinic in Dorset that specialises in working with children and adolescents.  We offer quick and effective treatment without the need of a waiting list and with most challenges being resolved within just a few sessions.

So, we now understand hypnotherapy performs incredibly well for children and consequently we can assist them to overcome a wide variety of issues.  If you feel that we can help you and your child then please call for a free, confidential, no obligation chat.

My son now has no worries of vomiting. After going through a nasty virus he was constantly worried he would vomit and ended up associating this with eating meat. After his session he is no longer having these problems and has returned to his healthy eating habits. I couldn’t have asked for more. I feel that it worked great. Anon
